Gail’s Personally Designed Bra Pattern (40C)

Gab Share

This is designed to work for Gail, who wears size 40 or 42C. It seems a comfortable bra is an impossible to find item now-a-days. She personally designed this pattern, but has not tried it yet. But with her extensive sewing experience, she thinks it will work. To make the bra smaller or larger just adjust the chest band and shoulder strap lengths bigger or smaller.

This is free and hasn’t been tested yet. But Gail has had extensive sewing experience. Nobody should be trying to sell this untested pattern for this reason. The best fabric is a light to medium-light weight jersey or knit fabric, kind of like the fabric used in cotton underwear. The lining fabric would be similar, but lighter in weight. Cotton or cotton/polyester blend knit fabric designed for athletic clothes would be good.

Remember to pre-wash your fabric before cutting, so that you can minimize shrinkage in the wash in the final product. I will probably drip dry the fabric and let it dry from a hanger. I never put bras in the dryer, but drip dry them. Generally, it’s recommended you pre-wash the fabric like how you’d wash the clothing piece you plan to make from it. I ended up buying half a yard of fabric for both the lining and main fabric because the fabric was very wide and a half yard was sufficient.

For this particular cut for the back, may want to modify the cut in the pattern slightly as shown in the image above, to make the bra look more like the picture in the back (above top of page). I made this pattern myself tracing over my favorite bra and it’s stretchy material, so it may be a bit off. I’m not sure the image above is true to size. The pdf file should be more accurate in terms of size.
